The establishment that would later be known as CityStore was opened in December 1981 as CityBooks, a modest municipal shop located at 61 Chambers Street in Manhattan. Initially, its inventory was centered around municipal publications (such as the “Green Book”) and a limited array of souvenirs, with a primary focus on informational content. In 1996, renovations at the original Chambers Street site necessitated a relocation to the Manhattan Municipal Building at One Centre Street. This location would serve as the principal physical home for the city’s official store.

Between 1997 and 1998, CityBooks underwent a rebranding to become CityStore, reflecting a more expansive retail mission: transitioning from solely books and publications to becoming the “official store of the City of New York,” offering officially licensed merchandise, collectibles, and souvenirs associated with New York City neighborhoods.

Additionally, a second, smaller kiosk is situated at the Manhattan Office of the City Clerk at 141 Worth Street, with a merchandise selection tailored for those getting married in NYC.

Throughout the 2000s, CityStore’s inventory saw significant growth: municipal reports and guides are regularly updated, items from local artists, collaborations with other City agencies, and limited-edition street signs and events have become integral to its operations. CityStore has established itself as a premier destination for individuals looking to express their connection to the city through high-quality products. The store serves as both a revenue stream and a platform for official city branding and civic engagement.
